Digital Media Lab: Multimedia

What is the Digital Media Lab?

The DML is a lab designed for advanced multimedia applications. Whereas most of the OIT facilities are perfect for students writing and printing out a thesis paper, the DML is geared towards users wanting to do more diverse activities such as scanning and printing items from 35mm film, 35mm pictures and video tape. Additionally, there are many applications to assist in the manipulation of graphics, sound and video. The DML is designed for such processing of audio-visual media.

Where is it located?

The DML is one of the labs located within the new Allison Road Classroom Building computing facility on Busch campus in New Brunswick.

Who can use the DML?

Any student, faculty or staff member of Rutgers University can use the DML.

When is the DML open?

The hours change throughout the year. You can view the Busch section of the NBCS hours of operation to see the current hours.

What alternatives to the DML do I have?

The regular OIT labs have some hardware and software that may be useful. This includes typical items like CD/ROM and ZIP drives at many labs and more sophisticated items like color printers, scanners and even MIDI keyboards at the New Brunswick hub labs (CACC, ARC, Tillett and Loree). Available standard software such as PageMaker, PowerPoint and PhotoShop may serve your needs. Various non-OIT departments - such as the Music department and Art department at Mason Gross and Landscape Architecture at Cook - have their own labs which you may be able to use. For more advanced video production the Office of Continuous Education offers Academic Video Services.

What do I need in order to use the equipment there?

You need a valid Rutgers ID. Additionally, you need to have a computer account on any student (eden), staff (rci) or computer science (remus) computer. Currently, there is no reservation policy enacted.

Is there ever any cost involved to use the DML?

Besides the Computer Fee that students already pay on the term bill, there is no additional fee to use the DML.

What special equipment is located at the DML?

There is a variety of equipment including color printers, CD/ROM drives, ZIP drives, slide scanners, regular scanners, cameras, VCRs and Targa cards.

What type of specialized software is available?

Besides the standard OIT desktop software there is additional multimedia software. Your best bet is to visit the lab and see what is there. Call ahead if you are looking for a particular package. (445-3129)

Where can I get special assistance for using the equipment and software?

There is a consultant on duty at all times to assist users with any problems or questions.

When can I no longer use the lab?

Like other OIT labs, you can continue to use the DML as long as you are student, faculty or staff associated with Rutgers. Within a year after leaving Rutgers you will no longer be allowed to utilize the lab. In rare cases, you may not be allowed to use the lab if you have broken the rules as explained below.

What limitations are placed on the kind of work which can be done in the DML?

  • There is a 2 pages per day limit on color printouts. If you feel your situation deserves special attention, please ask to speak to a manager or mail dml_lab@email.rutgers.edu
  • There is NO scanning allowed of any type of any official documents. The consultant on duty reserves the right to notify management and even the police in a situation that is suspicious.
  • The printers and other equipment in the DML are not to be relied upon as a replacement for items lacking at departments and other Rutgers organizations trying to conduct major activities. (For example creating stacks of handouts for students in classes, or publishing newsletters.)
